ASTANA (Sputnik) - The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is already doing a lot to develop artificial intelligence, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.
"This time, our focus is on high technology, digitalization, and artificial intelligence. Much is already being done in these areas in the EAEU," Putin said at the Eurasian Economic Forum.
Putin called AI a promising area for integration cooperation, adding that AI development requires enormous energy consumption and significant funding, but Russia is capable of allocating necessary resources for this.
Russia is one of a few countries that creates sovereign AI platforms, Putin said.
Russia is aware that joining forces with partners in the AI field can yield colossal results, Putin added.

The scenario in which millions of people worldwide will lose their jobs or be forced to change their professions due to artificial intelligence (AI) is very real, Putin noted.
"The labor market is being reshaped. The scenario in which millions of people will lose their jobs or be forced to change their occupations is very real. Entire professions may disappear as computer intelligence replaces humans," Putin said.
Competition between countries and multinational corporations for leadership in AI is already intensifying, the Russian leader added when outlining Russia's five competitive advantages in that area.
"First of all, we are well aware of how important this knowledge is, we understand the fundamental nature of this knowledge and these tools," he said.
Another advantage is Russia's awareness of both the opportunities and risks associated with the use of AI, Putin noted.
"Third, we possess intellectual potential. This process is actively advancing in education, and our academic science is ready to address challenges of this kind and scale. In other words, Russia has the necessary human resources to tackle these tasks," the president said.
Furthermore, AI development requires substantial energy resources, and Russia has advantages in this area due to its advanced nuclear energy technologies, as well as access to traditional energy sources and hydrogen technologies, Putin said.
Finally, the development of AI tools requires considerable financial investment, the president said, adding that Russia is capable of concentrating the necessary financial resources in these areas.
Russia is developing its own sovereign AI platforms, while recognizing the importance of international cooperation and joint efforts, which could yield significant results, he said.
Putin is paying a state visit to Kazakhstan from May 27-29. Earlier in the day, he held talks with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. After completing the official program, Putin attended the Eurasian Economic Forum.
